Why maple, why a sport finish

Maple is the traditional wood for dance and fitness floors: tight grain, pale color and a hardness that stands up to feet and light equipment. Many studio floors are laid on a resilient subfloor, which the layout depends on. A sport finish is a tougher, often matte coating chosen for traction and wear; the sheen and the traction target come from the finish maker's data sheet.

Lines, markings and recoat cycles

Task When
Maintenance recoat Before the finish wears through the traffic zones
Line painting or court and studio markings After sanding, before the final coats
Full sand and refinish When the finish is worn through, or after a long cycle of recoats

Lines go on between coats so the finish seals them in. Line paint is a flat line on the calculator.

Equipment and floor protection

Mirrors, barres and fitness machines come off the floor during the work, and heavy equipment goes back only after the cure time on the data sheet. Protective pads under machine feet and a matched cleaner from the finish maker help the finish last.

Do school or public gym floors count?
