What the word means

"Dustless" is a search term and a marketing label. Sanding wood makes fine dust, and wood dust is on California's Proposition 65 list. A sander connected to a vacuum captures most of that dust at the machine; some fine dust still settles, so rooms are closed off with plastic and cleaned afterward. Contained or low-dust describes the result more honestly than dust-free.

How containment works

Piece What it does
Vacuum-connected drum sander Pulls dust from the machine into a collector
Edger with a hose Handles the strip along the walls, where most dust escapes
Plastic barriers Seal doorways, vents and returns so dust stays in the room
HEPA filtration Filters the exhaust air before it returns to the room
Final cleaning Vacuum and damp wipe of the room, ledges and vents

The system is only as good as its seals: an open return duct or a missing barrier undoes it. Ask who seals the vents.

Questions that separate bids

  • Is the sander on a vacuum, and is the edger also on one?
  • Are doorways, vents and returns sealed, and who removes the plastic?
  • What is cleaned at the end, and what is left for the homeowner?
  • Is there a different charge for containment, or is it part of the standard price?
  • Are pets and people kept out while the machine runs?

What it adds to the price

Vendors list dust-contained sanding from about $5 per square foot, which falls inside the usual $3–$8 refinish band rather than on top of it. On the calculator, sand and refinish in the natural color runs $4–$6 per square foot in Ontario, CA, and no separate premium is added; ask each bid whether containment is included.

Dustless Hardwood Floor Sanding — common questions

Is dustless sanding really dust-free?

No. Sanding always makes dust. Vacuum-connected sanders capture most of it, and some fine dust still settles, so the room is sealed and cleaned afterward.

Is containment safe for people with allergies or asthma?

No claim can be made. Fine wood dust is an irritant, so people with breathing conditions stay out of the home during sanding and until the cleanup is done.
