What a recoat is
Screen and recoat, also called buffing and recoating, scuffs the surface of the existing finish with a fine abrasive screen, cleans away the dust and applies a fresh coat of finish. It does not remove stain or scratches that go through the finish, and it does not change the color. It restores the top layer so the wood underneath stays protected.
What the numbers show
- Old finish A recoat keeps it and only scuffs its surface so the new coat bonds.
- New coat A fresh coat on top; the wood is not touched.
- Removed layer A full sanding cuts through the finish and a little wood.
- New finish on bare wood Stain, if chosen, and new coats go on the sanded wood.
Does the floor qualify?
| Sign | Recoat works | Sand instead |
|---|---|---|
| Surface | Dull or lightly scuffed, finish still present | Scratches through to bare wood, gray worn paths |
| History | Cleaned only with products the finish maker allows | Wax, oil soap or polish used for years |
| Color | Happy with the current color | Wants a new stain |
| Water marks | None | Dark rings or black spots in the wood |
A simple test: drop a few drops of water on a clean spot. If they bead up, the finish is intact. If they soak in and darken the wood, the finish has failed there.
Wax, polish and why a recoat may not bond
Finish does not stick to wax or silicone-based polish, and a recoat over them can peel or fisheye. A test patch shows the answer before the whole floor is coated. If the test fails, the floor needs a full sand. On the calculator this appears as "old wax or polish" and adds about $1–$2 per square foot.

Screen and Recoat — common questions
How often can a floor be recoated?
A recoat is a maintenance step; how often depends on traffic and the finish. No fixed schedule applies to every home, so ask the finish maker's recommendation.
How long before furniture goes back after a recoat?
The finish maker's data sheet sets it for that day's temperature and humidity. A recoat is often a day or two, not the longer wait of a full refinish.
